Dear Aupair Match UK: How do I become an Aupair in the UK: Post Brexit Edition

Hello Pedro,

How are you and how is your warm little town of Cadiz, I hope you and your family are keeping safe during Covid.

In your letter, you asked how you can become an Aupair in the UK after Brexit, you said you want to come to the UK to be an Aupair but you were worried and wanted clarity on the impact of Brexit and how it has limited your options.

I’m happy to help you with your inquiry, Pedro.

Before Brexit, as a young Spanish man that you are, you were free to travel within Europe and UK included in this border-free European agreement, this has changed. The UK is no longer part of this agreement, you can no longer travel to the UK free of border control, and the same rule that applies to the rest of the world, outside Europe now applies to you and other Europeans.

You would now need a visa to travel and you can read more about this in my letter to Fatima (link to the previous blog ) but I know that those visa requirements are extremely tough for you because of the financial responsibilities involved, so I am going to share with you a few options available to you as a European.

  1. Apply for a pre-settled status: The only Europeans allowed to come into the UK now without border control are people of British and Irish citizenship, everyone else needs a visa. However, the UK government allowed European citizens who were already in the UK before December 31, 2020, the chance to apply for a pre-settled status which is a gateway to British citizenship and lets you work, study, live, and travel freely without border control. The deadline to apply for this status was June 30, 2021, if you have missed this deadline or weren’t even eligible, then pay attention to one more option, the next one.

  2. Sign the Youth Visa petition: A petition has been started to lobby the government to make or reinstall arrangements that let young European citizens travel without border control, if this is successful, it would take away the challenges you now have which prevent you from being able to be an Aupair. This option is a long game and it is political, but if you and enough other young Europeans and even British families can sign this petition, it would be rewarding and worth the wait.

I hope you do get to sign this petition Pedro, and also share it with your friends. Talking about friends, how are they all doing? Are they all still fond of swimming and sunbathing on the Marbella beaches? Tell them I said hello.

Signing out now, peace!

I hope you had a good read-through and if not enjoyed it, at least found it useful.
